Glossy vs Matte Screens

Glossy screen monitors
Based on what I have read on the web, the majority of people prefer a matte screen monitor. Not me.

For many years I used CRT monitors with glossy screens. Text was sharp and graphics looked awesome. When I purchased my first LCD monitor it had a matte screen. In comparison the text looked fuzzy and the graphics uninspiring.

I put up with the matte screen monitor for many years. In 2009 I had had enough and went online in search of a glossy screen monitor. It was surprising to me how few desktop glossy screen monitors are available. I eventually wound up on Dell's web site and purchased one of their wide-screen glossy monitors. After several days of use I liked it so much I immediately purchased a second. Unfortunately Dell no longer sells this model monitor.

Glare and reflection are cited as the reason most people choose matte screens over glossy. I haven't found either to be a problem with my glossy monitors. If glossy screen reflection is such an issue, it would seem to be more an issue with a laptop than a desktop as laptops are frequently taken outside and to other brightly lit areas.

My two glossy monitors face two large east facing windows. For a few hours in the morning as the sun comes up I have to adjust the blinds slightly or glare is excessive. I had to do the same for my matte screen monitor so that's no big deal. It's important to note that matte monitors are not immune to glare and reflection, just that they do a better job at diffusing it - at the expense of some graphics quality.

If the appearance of text and graphics is not overly important to you, or you work outside or in an excessively bright room, then a matte screen monitor might be the better choice. However, if in addition to work you use your computer for viewing photos, watching movies, playing games, and/or web design, the superior graphics quality of the glossy screen monitor is a definite advantage.

Conclusion:
In the end there is no real winner or loser when comparing matte and glossy screen monitors. Both monitor types will get the job done. If you are willing sacrifice some graphics quality for less reflection then go matte. If not, go glossy. For me, I'll take a glossy screen monitor.
