Insignia DTV Tuner (HD to Analog Converter) Review

The Insignia converter box allows you to watch a digital broadcast on your analog TV. It comes neatly packaged with all of the cables necessary for connecting the unit directly to a TV or through a VCR. After reading the instructions, connecting the unit to my antenna, VCR and TV was quick and easy as was the initial set-up of the unit. Once the Insignia converter box was connected, I set the basic options as described in the user manual, set the output channel to 4, did a channel search, and set the remote to recognize my TV. The set-up procedure is fully explained in the user guide. With the Insignia converter box turned on, all stations are crisp and clear - most of the time. According to the troubleshooting section of the user manual, the picture may briefly freeze, fracture and the audio cut out when the signal through the antenna is weak (see HDTV antenna information this page). Usually picture problems will only happen a couple of times in a 30 minute TV show if at all. However, there have been a few times when the picture and audio cut out so often that the show was almost unwatchable. It is important to note that this problem appears to affect other brand converter boxes as well. read more about this issue. The Insignia does not seem to generate much heat, which is an issue with some other converter boxes. Based on my experience with the Insignia converter box so far, I feel it is a quality product and recommend it to anyone in need of a converter box for an analog TV.
