Kodak PlaySport HD Waterproof Pocket Video Camera Review

If you are looking for a low-cost pocket-sized video recorder with the ability to record 1080p HD video and image stabilization look no further than the Kodak PlaySport.
Kodak PlaySport HD Video Camera

The primary reasons I selected the Kodak PlaySport were:

  • Pocket size
  • Image stabalization
  • Rechargeable battery
  • 1080p HD recording
  • Low cost
  • Good reviews

As far as the underwater capabilities of the camera, I don't think I will go swimming with my camera anytime soon. However, it is comforting to know that my camera can get wet and live to record another day.

What I Like About The Kodak PlaySport

I like that the camera is easy to use. Even though I've only owned this camera for several weeks, I feel I know every feature and function available to me.

I like the pocket size of the camera. My last video recorder was an analog Sony HandyCam that required a duffle bag to transport the camera, tapes, charger, etc.

Dislikes

I don't like that videos can only be saved as .mov files. This is fine if your video editor can work with .mov files, or has a conversion utility. However, my PC video editing software does not understand .mov files, and cannot convert them to a format that it can work with. I've looked for free video format conversion utilities online, and some are available, but I have a certain amount of fear associated with installing free software I get online.

The internal memory of the PlaySport is minimal which means you must purchase a SD or SDHC memory card before you can start recording videos with the camera. This was not a deal breaker for me, but it does add to the cost of the camera.

Conclusion

After making several videos with the Kodak PlaySport I can say I'm happy with my purchase. The camera produces high-quality videos with little fuss. For the smoothest video footage I recommend that you use a tripod whenever possible - image stabilization helps, but has limitations.

Choosing a SDHC memory card took a little time as I didn't know what class to use, and customer reviews of various memory cards suggest many do not function well in the PlaySport camera. However, the memory card I finally purchased was relatively inexpensive and has been working just fine.
