Logitech S220 Speaker System Review
My last pair of computer speakers was an expensive Altec Lansing 5.1 system that stopped working without warning, even though I barely used them.
As seldom as I played games or listened to music, I decided that I could get by with a much cheaper speaker system. In fact, I set-out to see just how cheap I could go and still get reasonably good quality sound.
What I found was Logitech's S220 computer speaker system.
Key Features:
- 2 satellites, 1 subwoofer
- Wired remote - on/off, volume, headphone input, mic input
- Bass level control on subwoofer
- Total RMS power - 17 W RMS
- Satellites - 8 W RMS (4 W x 2)
- Subwoofer - 9 W RMS
- All necessary cables
I ordered the Logitech S220 computer speaker system from Amazon.com. It came double boxed, and all parts were protectively wrapped in plastic - a nice surprise for a $24.99 speaker system with free shipping.
The speakers and subwoofer were smaller than I expected based on the product pictures. Also, this is a complete desktop system - all three speakers (satellites, subwoofer) must go on your desktop as there is not enough wiring to get the subwoofer on the floor. The subwoofer is not very big so this should not be a problem for most users.
Only a couple of connections are required to get the speakers up and running and the color coded cables make it easy for anyone to plug-in, regardless of technical knowledge.
The overall sound quality of the speaker system is better than what I expected it would be. The sound from the satellites alone is not overly impressive, but combined with the subwoofer the sound quality is surprisingly good.
The only negative experience I have had with the speakers to date is that turning the bass volume control on the back of the subwoofer causes the speakers to crackle and cut-out sporadically until you stop turning the control.
The wired remote looks nice, and puts volume control of your speakers within easy reach. The power switch on the remote does not feel very strong. However, if it's handled with care I don't think it will be a problem.
Conclusion:
The Logitech S220 speaker system delivers good quality sound and appearance for such a low-priced system. Unless you are a hard-core gamer, or expect sound perfection, I highly recommend that you give them a try.
